Microblading vs Nano Brows: Which Is Right for Your Skin?

Microblading is performed with a hand-held tool that holds a row of fine needles, used like a blade to draw individual hair-like strokes of pigment into the upper layer of skin. It is a manual technique, and in the right hands it produces some of the most natural, believable hair strokes in permanent makeup.

Nano brows reach the same goal with a digital machine and a single ultra-fine needle. The artist places each stroke one pass at a time. Because the needle is finer and the depth is more controlled, nano strokes tend to heal more uniformly, especially on skin that does not hold a hand-blade stroke well.

Both are forms of cosmetic tattooing: pigment sits in the upper skin and fades over time, which is what keeps the result looking natural as your face changes. At Eastside Microblading & Beauty, both are performed by Amanda Banks or by an artist she has personally trained to the same standard.

The single most useful question is how oily your skin is. Oil breaks down crisp hand-blade strokes as they heal, so microblading on oily skin can blur into a soft, less defined result within months. Nano brows handle oily and mature skin much better because the strokes are placed differently and heal more cleanly.

This is the call we make together. We will look at your skin, your natural brow hair, and how you want to wear your brows, then recommend the technique that will still look good in a year, not just on healing day. If microblading is a better fit, we will say so; if nano brows are, the same.

Microblading lasts about 12 to 18 months for most clients. Nano brows often last a little longer, roughly 18 to 30 months, partly because they heal more uniformly on the skin types they suit. If you want the longest-wearing option, powder brows hold the longest of all, though with a softer makeup-style finish rather than crisp strokes.

Comfort is similar for both. Most clients rate it a 2 or 3 out of 10. Eastside Microblading & Beauty uses a topical numbing approach, and many clients are relaxed enough to doze through the appointment. Both techniques include a perfecting touch-up at 6 to 8 weeks to refine anything that healed lighter than planned.
