The pre-visit suitability review
You can book online or ask for a recommendation. For neutralization we usually ask for photos of your natural lips or any existing lip tattoo first. The studio screens for medical contraindications and any history of cold sores, so a doctor-prescribed antiviral can be arranged. We tell you honestly whether neutralization is the right path and roughly how many sessions your case is likely to take before treatment.

Undertone assessment and color planning
At your appointment, the artist reads how dark, blue, or purple your natural lip tone is and selects the warm corrector pigment that will balance it. This is the most important decision in the whole service, because the corrector laid now determines whether your future color heals true. You approve the plan before any pigment is placed.

Numbing
A topical numbing cream is applied to the lips and given time to take effect. Most clients describe the sensation during the service as light scratching rather than pain. There are no injectables.

First corrector pass
The artist lays the warm corrector tone in light, even passes to begin balancing the cool undertone. This pass is about the foundation, not the final color, so the lips may look warmer or more muted than the shade you are working toward. That is exactly what neutralization is supposed to do at this stage.

Healing and reassessment
The corrector is allowed to fully heal before the next decision is made, which is why neutralization is staged across sessions rather than rushed into one. The artist reassesses how the undertone settled and plans the next pass, whether that is more correction or the start of your target color.

Building the target color
Once the undertone is balanced and healed, the target color is built on the corrected foundation, often through lip blushing, so it now heals true instead of turning. Depending on how cool your starting tone was, this can take one session or more, and the artist tells you honestly where you are at each step.

I get cold sores. What do I need to do before lip neutralization?+
If you have ever had a cold sore, you need a short course of a doctor-prescribed antiviral such as valacyclovir or acyclovir, typically starting a couple of days before your appointment and continuing a few days after. The micro-wounds from lip neutralization can reactivate the dormant virus during healing. The lips are numbed with a topical cream before and during the service. Most clients describe the sensation as light scratching rather than pain, and many find it far more comfortable than they expected. There are no injectables. What do the healing stages look like?+
Healing follows the same arc as lip blushing. Days 1 to 2: bolder, warmer color and mild swelling. Days 3 to 4: the lips peel from the center outward and may feel tight. Days 5 to 7: the surface heals and the color looks much lighter. Weeks 2 to 6: the corrected tone settles in. Because this is a foundation pass, the lips may look warmer or more muted than your final color, which is exactly what neutralization is meant to do.
